I also did not use a bread machine, so I let the yeast proof with the milk, water, and sugar, then added the rest of the ingredients. Then punched down, let rest, and shaped into rolls. The BEST soft and chewy bread roll for hoagies/submarine/grinders. I can make them fresh when I need them and this recipe makes them alot easier. If you like them harder, bake them just a little longer.
