Instructions to make Golden Syrup:
- In a shallow saucepan add tap water and ½cup of sugar. Allow to simmer on medium heat without stirring
- As the water and sugar mixture simmers, slowly add the hot water to it without splashing
- Then immediately add the remaining sugar. Again, DO NOT STIR!
- Place the lemon slice in the liquid and reduce heat to medium-low
- Place a wooden spoon over the saucepan so that as the mixture becomes foamy, it does not spill. Let simmer for 40minutes
- If using a glass jar, take syrup off heat, let cool for a few minutes then transfer into a sterilized jar. Do not close until completely cooled
- If using a plastic bottle, let syrup cool for not less than 15minutes. Then sit the bottle upright in a bowl of water as the syrup is poured in. Let cool then close the lid. It will keep at room temperature for a couple of months. I sterilized an empty Hullets bottle and filled it with my homemade golden syrup
